Culturally rich and grounded, at the same time progressive and ready to imbibe ‘newness’ describes our onward journey which nearly spans three decades. Memories of those nascent beginnings still resound in every nook and cranny of our school. We are now thirty years young and proudly walk on a path laid down by our stalwart protagonists. They dared to dream from a humble tent age and had the courage and resilience to fulfill the same. Overcoming all hurdles the dream materialized into a name to reckon with.
The Primary school was started in April, 1983 and holds classes from Nursery to V. The school is located in Vasant Vihar (South Delhi), a kilometre away from its senior branch at R. K. Puram. The Nursery Wing of the school is housed in a separate building close to the Junior school. We are a family of approximately 1550 students and a staff of about 90 teachers & approximately 40 other support staff members.
Our first headmistress Mrs. Bimla Suri (1983-1984) laid the foundation with the beacons Mr. Dharamvira Ji, Dr. P. N. Kripal and Dr. R.S. Lugani guiding and helping to steer the ship.
As years passed by not only did we grow in numbers but we moved from the cusp of ‘learning and imparting’ to become a school with a definitive description of our own. Small beginnings with thematic and language teaching, the Whole World approach gave impetus to our innovative teaching style. Programmes which started as a fun activity took gargantuan proportions. Our curriculum was incomplete without festivals, literacy week, sports, grandparent’s day etc. A better building with all the amenities in the heart of the city saw us growing in numbers, style and stature.
Our little wings were fanned by our confident heads Dr. R. S. Lugani, Dr. Mrs. Shayama Chona, and Dr. D. R. Saini who helped us reach even foreign shores. We are already a decade into an exchange programme with Kawada Elementary School, Nagano- Japan.
Our headmistresses over these years have made fathomless contribution to the growth of the school with their unmitigated devotion.
Mrs. D. Kaplash (1984-1986), Mrs. Nina Sehgal (1986-1995), Mrs. Abha Sehgal (1995-2000), Mrs. Anita Malhotra (2000-2002), Mrs. Shobha Banerjee (2002-2011), Mrs. Archana Pental (2011- till date)
Our Nursery class which lays and nurtures the foundation of the ‘school cycle’ is housed in a separate building whereby the little ones can run, play, express and partake in safe open environs. After a year of careful nurturing in the Nursery Wing, the infants take pride in graduating into the Junior School (Prep to Class V). Then comes the ultimate thrill when the students with well-rounded personalities move on to class VI at the Senior School at DPS, R. K.Puram. Activities underlined by joy quotient have our happy Nursery Graduates moving into the Junior Wing every year.
Our school follows the curriculum based on the guidelines given by the National Curriculum Framework 2005 (N.C.E.R.T.) with a thematic approach. Nursery to class I has the support of double teachers in each class. For the Holistic development of each child, a system of Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (C.C.E) is carried out. The assessment is based on the grade system.

1.Sports Facilities
“You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.” Plato
“Play is the only way the highest intelligence of humankind can unfold.” Joseph Chilton Pearce
Understanding the essence of the quotes by Plato & Pearce, sports is definitely a very important component in our curriculum. It is vital for any age group, however, it is more so for our little ones. In their growing up years, it teaches them to be a part of a team, the importance of working together to accomplish a common goal, learning to shoulder personal responsibility and above all how to cope with defeat and failure. It teaches them to remain focused on a task for the period of time, assess their weaknesses and go beyond their limits. Children learn to respect – respect the rules of the game, respect the cues from their coach and also respect as well as accept suggestions from their teammates.
In keeping with the DPS R. K. Puram tradition of achieving excellence in sports, we at DPS Vasant Vihar provide ample opportunities to the child to explore and choose the sport he or she wishes to pursue. The sports facilities include a covered basketball court, a cricket training pitch, football field, running tracks, skating rink, table tennis etc. Besides our regular staff we also have visiting instructors and coaches, who are experts in their area of sport to train our kids for matches within the school and also compete in inter school matches. Regular exercise, drill, training in march past & aerobics is an important feature in their time table. Here is a glimpse into our facilities and how at Delhi Public School Vasant Vihar we nurture our sport stars.
2.Audio Visual Room
DPS Vasant Vihar has an Audio Visual Room (AV Room) which has a seating capacity for 80 students. It easily accommodates 2 sections. It has been designed for a very informal kind of gathering and hence is most suited for students who comfortably sit on the step wise seating. The AV room is fitted with all essential electronic & IT gadgets like the overhead LCD projector with screen, a DVD player, a computer system. This enables the teachers to show a Power Point presentation, play back a video or a CD, organize talk shows and invite guest speakers. There is also a large collection of CD’s & Video recordings.
