English
At DPS the children are taught to use English as a means of communication. Students are made aware of the world and its surrounding and they inculcate those values which help him/her to become a more sensitive & humane person. Our endeavor is to enable the child to read, speak and write with fluency and understanding.
However the method varies:-
In the junior classes we develop the interest of the child through story telling and visual impact. Language development is an integral part of the subject and periods are allocated in every class. Each child is encouraged to come forward and speak and thus gain confidence. Class debates, jam sessions, inter house debates, audio-visual aids, etc. are given prime importance. CD's, flash cards, charts, over head projector, video, T.V are all effectively used. The text book followed is "English Now" accompanied by monthly assignments.
We try to test application of knowledge gained through innovative technologies like glido grams, errors word puzzle, identification and matching kangaroo words, diagrams etc.
Environmental Sciences
We in DPS realized that education is a process by which each child becomes a useful citizen not only of India but also of the world. In this endeavour we realized that the need of the hour was to look into depleting world resources – be it in terms of manpower, forest, water wildlife etc.
Teaching EVS
The new book Environmental Studies Looking Around by N.C.E.R.T. seems to be the need of the hour to make children aware of environmental issues. The book is activity based so it discourages children from rote learning and its makes the children partners in eductation. Children learn through craft, project work, group activity, debates & visits to places. A number of activities are organized in school.
Hindi
Importance of learning Hindi
* Hindi being the mother tongue of most of our children, is learnt first at home from parents and relatives. We, at school, help to further enhance the language learning when the children are very young.
* Hindi is our national language and used in most states as the language of communication and official documents.
* Hindi is a scientific and easy to learn language since the spoken word is also the way the word is written.
* Hindi is also the 3rd most widely spoken language in the world.
Aim of Hindi teaching
* To enable the child to become perfect in reading, listening, speaking and writing the Hindi language.
* To achieve this goal we are doing plenty of work in the classes, as well as outside the class in the form of activities like – recitation, debate, story- telling, reading, extempore speech, audio- visual presentations, role playing and dramatization, power point presentations on computer etc.
* For the teaching of good speaking skill we emphasise on correct pronunciation. So we are following the modern technique reading and recitation first by the teacher and then by the children – both individually and in groups.
* After teaching the lesson we discuss the questions and give each child a chance to answer for maximum participation. Following the discussion children are able to write the answers on their own.
* For developing the listening skill, we read a story and passage or play an audio tape and ask the children to answer the question based on that. It helps the child to be more attentive to what he is being told.
* We encourage the children to speak correct Hindi so that they may write it correctly too. To develop the creativity and thinking ability of the children, we give them paragraph writing, poetry creation, story writing, sometimes on their own and sometimes by giving them helping words and rhyming words also.
* Children are encouraged to read good Hindi books, stories and to write new words in a notebook. They make a class magazine every month which makes them feel proud of doing some creative work, be it as an editor, writer or illustrator.
* In the library period, they are asked to write about whatever they have read as a book review, so that their written expression can be improved.
* To improve their vocabulary and comprehension level they are asked to learn antonyms, synonyms, one word formation etc. Also, they are asked to read and answer the questions related to their grammer concept.
* Parents too can contribute towards developing a love for this beautiful language in their ward by reading good Hindi stories and poems with them and speaking chaste Hindi at home.

1.Sports Facilities
“You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.” Plato
“Play is the only way the highest intelligence of humankind can unfold.” Joseph Chilton Pearce
Understanding the essence of the quotes by Plato & Pearce, sports is definitely a very important component in our curriculum. It is vital for any age group, however, it is more so for our little ones. In their growing up years, it teaches them to be a part of a team, the importance of working together to accomplish a common goal, learning to shoulder personal responsibility and above all how to cope with defeat and failure. It teaches them to remain focused on a task for the period of time, assess their weaknesses and go beyond their limits. Children learn to respect – respect the rules of the game, respect the cues from their coach and also respect as well as accept suggestions from their teammates.
In keeping with the DPS R. K. Puram tradition of achieving excellence in sports, we at DPS Vasant Vihar provide ample opportunities to the child to explore and choose the sport he or she wishes to pursue. The sports facilities include a covered basketball court, a cricket training pitch, football field, running tracks, skating rink, table tennis etc. Besides our regular staff we also have visiting instructors and coaches, who are experts in their area of sport to train our kids for matches within the school and also compete in inter school matches. Regular exercise, drill, training in march past & aerobics is an important feature in their time table. Here is a glimpse into our facilities and how at Delhi Public School Vasant Vihar we nurture our sport stars.
2.Audio Visual Room
DPS Vasant Vihar has an Audio Visual Room (AV Room) which has a seating capacity for 80 students. It easily accommodates 2 sections. The AV room is fitted with all essential electronic & IT gadgets like the overhead LCD projector with screen, a DVD player, a computer system.
